Helen Kaminski celebrates 40 years of craftsmanship and sustainability

Australian accessories brand Helen Kaminski celebrates its 40th anniversary with a special limited-edition capsule collection. Founded in 1983 by Helen Marie Kaminski, the brand began with handcrafted raffia hats designed to protect her children from the Australian sun. Today, Helen Kaminski is known globally for its sustainable accessories that blend traditional craftsmanship with modern design and innovation.

The brand is dedicated to nurturing artisans and preserving the craft that started it all. They work with skilled artisans, primarily women, from Sri Lanka, Madagascar, Ecuador, Spain, and Australia. The artisans in Sri Lanka receive raffia from the brand to create braided coils or hand-crochet hats, taking up to three days to complete one hat with over 18,000 stitches.

To commemorate their 40th anniversary, Helen Kaminski launches a capsule collection of hats and bags, highlighting raffia as the central material. The collection features a refined raffia wide braid, modern designs with a nod to the brand’s origins, and a embossed Raffia Seed logo. The luxurious Kami hat showcases a wide braid crown and Italian leather brim, while the Blanca visor receives contemporary updates with adjustable leather details and a statement gold buckle. The anniversary bag selection includes the Luna crossbody and the classic bucket bag, Ava.

The highlight of the collection is the limited-edition Helen 5 hat, a tribute to the iconic ‘Classic 5’ hat that started the brand. Handcrafted over two days, the Helen 5 features a signature round crown with a versatile brim that can be worn up or down, accented with a soft leather trim in various colours. Each Helen 5 hat comes with an exclusive ‘anniversary edition’ label.

The brand’s commitment to craftsmanship extends to empowering artisans by partnering with the National Apprentice and Industrial Training Authority of Sri Lanka to develop a national curriculum, recognising crochet and braid skills and providing government-recognised qualifications. Additionally, training opportunities have been introduced in Madagascar to further support artisans.

The 40th Anniversary Collection is a celebration of Helen Kaminski’s heritage, showcasing sustainable fashion with timeless style. The collection is available online and in stores throughout 2023, allowing customers to own a piece of the brand’s remarkable history and dedication to craftsmanship.
